How to Shop by Yarn Weight
It can be intimidating to buy yarn online, but we know not everyone has a local yarn shop close by where they can get the resources to make their projects come to life. That’s why we’re here. We’ve provided a bit of information below about how to shop by weight but if you ever need help, you can always call one of our fiber consultants for help.
When choosing a yarn for your project the first bit of information you need to consider is its gauge. But what does gauge mean? Simple: It’s a measurement of the number of stitches and rows per inch of knitting. So how do you choose a yarn by weight from Seed Stitch? First check your pattern. What does it say under gauge? Note: often times a designer will list the gauge over a 4 inch swatch. For example: A DK weight yarn knits at 5.25 – 6 sts per inch, which might read at 21 -24 sts over a 4 inch swatch.
Once you’ve identified what weight yarn the pattern recommends you can choose from the categories of yarn below or in our menu. Please note: We all knit differently and the exact gauge you get when knitting with a particular yarn may be different than the gauge another knitter achieves. So we recommend that you always knit up a 4X4 inch swatch of any yarn to double check that you are indeed achieving the gauge you desire. Find out more about gauge here on our blog.
